Bold Bright Prints?

I made a quick trip to the mall the other day to pick up a birthday gift and took a few minutes to walk through the children's department of one of the major department stores.  Plenty of cute clothes for little girls, but as I flipped through the racks I became a little overwhelmed with the bright loud prints and embellishments.  I love fun prints and bright colors, but I still prefer to see the child, not the outfit.

Smocked Tulips

It was bound to happen sooner or later.  I was smocking one of my favorite smocking designs, Ellen McCarn's "Tulip Garden", on yellow gingham, and started having one of those moments when everything seems a little too familiar.  It finally came to me.  I had used this same design on yellow gingham about 20 years ago for a special birthday dress!  Same fabric, same smocking, different style dress.

Clothespins

Do you remember clothespins? Do you still have a few tucked away just in case.  When I was a young wife and mommy in the late 1970s, if your house was more than 15 years old, it probably had a clothesline in the backyard.  I loved hanging out sheets, towels and diapers.  Lots and lots of diapers!  I had a clothes drier, but used the clothesline as a reason to be outside a little more, and loved the fresh air smell that lingered on everything.  I've always regretted that a camera wasn't handy the day I spotted one of our little guys standing under the clothesline, holding onto the end of his blanket with his thumb in his mouth. It was getting a little too close to nap time. :)

Featured In Sew Beautiful Magazine

The Shirt and Shorts #139 is featured in the newest Sew Beautiful Magazine Aug/Sept issue. Tips for good collar construction are included in the article.

My husband's 1956 baby picture was the inspiration for the outfit. Remember when all photos were black and white and if you wanted color they were hand tinted?  With all the digital photos that we have available today, I find it hard to get my head around the fact that this is one of the two baby photos we have of him.

For Baby Boy

Just right for a new baby boy.  A pale blue and white diaper shirt with bridging around the collar and tiny tucks.

Buttons all the way down the back and no snaps to fuss with during diaper change.
